Webex Contact Center resiliency and failover

Verified 2026-10-02 · 54 sources · tier 2–4

Also known as wxcc-failover, wxcc-high-availability.

Webex Contact Center deploys all of its services and infrastructure components across 3 AWS availability zones, and Cisco states that this makes the service resilient to an availability-zone failure, with failed instances replaced automatically 48 4. Redundancy for voice depends on how the voice channel is connected: Local Gateway route groups provide trunk-level redundancy, and the vPOP model uses paired VPOPs and CUBE high availability 43 54 52.

Cloud platform resiliency

All Webex Contact Center services and infrastructure components are deployed across 3 AWS availability zones 48. Cisco's business continuity section describes the 3 availability zones within an AWS region as separate physical locations with independent utilities 5. Cisco states that the 3-zone deployment makes Webex Contact Center resilient to an availability-zone failure and that failed instances are replaced automatically 4. Cisco engineering reports that critical Webex Contact Center applications run 3 or more replicas active-active across 3 availability zones 7.

Cisco states that global distribution of Webex Contact Center AI inference reroutes inference requests if a local data center has an issue 2.

See also Contact center business continuity.

Monitoring, testing and incident communication

Webex Contact Center runs internal and external probes and periodic tests against its services and infrastructure, and failures trigger alerts that are handled as proactive incidents 36. Cisco engineering states that it continuously runs automated end-to-end tests for caller, agent, supervisor and admin personas in every Webex Contact Center region 19. Cisco engineering also runs on-demand automated chaos tests and Game Day events with controlled random failure injection against Webex Contact Center 9.

From 1 August 2025, Webex Contact Center incident, maintenance and complex feature rollout notifications moved to the Global Service Status platform 46. CJPIM email and Webex room alerts were discontinued at the same time 46.

The October 2025 AWS us-east-1 event

Cisco reports that Webex Contact Center calls and agent logins were not impacted during the October 2025 AWS us-east-1 regional event 33. Cisco reports that the event briefly impacted real-time reporting, outbound, and digital interaction routing 32. Cisco also reports partial degradation of recording management and some IVR flows during the event 34. Cisco engineering attributes the limited impact to pre-provisioned capacity for hot paths, and to freezing scale changes during the incident rather than depending on new capacity 35.

Voice ingress and media locality

Webex Contact Center and Webex Calling share a global network of edge access services for voice ingress 44. Webex Contact Center voice ingress services perform third-party call control over SIP 51. These services answer the incoming call and perform transfer, conference and other call control operations 51. Webex Contact Center supports keeping voice media within the local region where its voice media edge and ingress services run 29. Administrators can choose a PSTN Region for a contact center PSTN location, and that choice decides where Webex Contact Center processes media 37.

See also Webex Contact Center voice channel and PSTN options.

Local Gateway redundancy on Webex Calling-based voice

For Webex Contact Center voice channels, route groups let you assign multiple trunks with priority weighting, both to scale Local Gateway deployments and for high availability 43. If the highest-priority trunk in a Webex Calling route group is unavailable, the system attempts to route the call to a trunk with a lower priority 41. Cisco describes a Local Gateway route group as giving the highest flexibility, scalability and fault tolerance for contact center PSTN, but only if it is properly configured for redundancy 27.

During provisioning, each Webex Calling Local Gateway is assigned to 2 Webex Media PoP locations for redundancy and high availability 28. For Webex Contact Center Local Gateway deployments above 250 concurrent calls, the trunk type must be Certificate Based 8. Cisco does not support endpoint devices in the same Webex Calling location used for Webex Contact Center PSTN 30.

From IOS-XE 17.9.1, CUBE high availability can be deployed as a Local Gateway for Webex Calling premises-based PSTN trunks 11. CUBE HA uses layer 2 box-to-box redundancy that checkpoints signaling and media state for each call from the active router to the standby router 14. This checkpointing gives stateful failover of active calls 14.

vPOP model redundancy

In the vPOP voice model, Webex Contact Center uses 2 VPOPs for high availability, and Cisco advises the service provider to set up 2 POPs as well 54. 2 VPOPs are configured per geographic region so that the enterprise CUBE can switch between them if a network failure occurs 16. 2 enterprise data centers can connect to the same Webex Contact Center VPOPs within the same geographic region 18. An enterprise CUBE HA pair sources all signaling and media from a virtual IP address, so active calls are preserved when one CUBE fails 52.

See also Webex Contact Center Voice Services Platform and Voice POP.

Agent Desktop connection recovery

When Agent Desktop loses connectivity to its WebSocket interface, the desktop detects the loss and attempts to reconnect and re-login 17. An agent is signed out of Agent Desktop if a network outage lasts longer than the Lost Connection Recovery Timeout 23. The timeout defaults to 120 seconds 24. It accepts values from 120 seconds (2 minutes) to 600 seconds (10 minutes) 26. The value is set in seconds in Control Hub under Services > Contact Center > Tenant Settings > Desktop, in the System Settings section 25.

Agent Desktop cannot be used in multiple browsers or multiple tabs at once, and a prompt appears if the agent signs in to multiple instances 45. If a session cannot be restored because of a connection failure, session expiry or local storage issues, Cisco tells agents to reload the browser to refresh the session 39.

See also Troubleshooting Webex Contact Center Agent Desktop disconnects and connection-lost banners.

Diagnosing it

A Webex Calling Local Gateway trunk shows Impaired when the connection between at least 1 Webex Calling edge proxy and the Local Gateway has failed 50. A trunk shows Offline when the connection to Webex Calling is unsuccessful 50. Agents signed out after an outage longer than the Lost Connection Recovery Timeout are an expected result of that setting 23. Platform incidents and maintenance are published on the Global Service Status platform 46.

Flow error handling

Flow Designer activities can have an Undefined Error path configured to handle system errors during flow execution 22.

See also Webex Contact Center Flow Designer architecture.

Platform differences

Enhanced Survivability is an on-premises, calling-only failover capability for Webex Calling Dedicated Instance during a customer network outage or a cloud outage 20.
