Troubleshooting headset call controls in softphones

Verified 2026-10-02 · 58 sources · tier 2

Also known as headset-buttons-not-working.

Headset call controls in softphones depend on the connection type, the client or browser in use, and in some cases vendor software installed on the computer 81015. In the browser, the WebHID API is available in Chrome 89 and Edge 89 and later, and Genesys Cloud uses a WebHID connection prompt when a user enables Jabra call controls 4912.

How browser call controls work

The WebHID API is available in Chrome 89 and Edge 89 and later 49. According to the Chrome developer documentation, Firefox and Safari do not support the WebHID API 52. WebHID is available only in secure contexts (HTTPS) 53.

A site gains access to a HID device only after the user actively selects that device in a browser chooser opened by navigator.hid.requestDevice() 54. Devices the user has already granted are returned by navigator.hid.getDevices() 54. From Chrome 100, a site can revoke its own access to a WebHID device by calling device.forget() 51. Chrome blocks WebHID access to security-sensitive devices such as FIDO tokens and to protected usages such as generic keyboards and mice 48.

Managed Edge deployments

The Microsoft Edge policy WebHidAllowDevicesForUrls automatically grants listed sites permission to access HID devices with the given vendor and product IDs 1. The policy is supported in Microsoft Edge 109 or later on Windows and macOS and 155 or later on Android, and it is not supported on iOS 4. Each device entry must have a vendor_id 3. Omitting product_id matches any device from that vendor, and an entry with a product_id but no vendor_id is ignored 3. If a URL appears in both WebHidAllowDevicesForUrls and WebHidBlockedForUrls, WebHidAllowDevicesForUrls takes precedence 2. If the allow policy is unset, DefaultWebHidGuardSetting applies, and if that is also unset, the user's own setting applies 2.

Diagnosing dead or out-of-sync buttons

WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that the Genesys Cloud Jabra, Poly and Yealink articles follow a consistent pattern: call-control buttons work over a USB cable or a vendor dongle but not over the PC's built-in Bluetooth radio, so an agent's first check for dead buttons is how the headset is connected 23. Cisco strongly recommends using a third-party headset with Webex only with the dongle provided by the headset manufacturer 47.

For browser clients, Chrome's chrome://device-log page shows HID and USB device events and can be used to debug WebHID device access 50. Genesys Cloud's WebRTC audio troubleshooting advises closing or blocking other applications that are accessing the microphone or speakers 5. Microsoft also advises exiting third-party apps before joining a Teams meeting, because peripheral button controls may not work when those apps are using the peripheral or when Teams considers the peripheral already in use 41.

Platform differences

Genesys Cloud

Genesys Cloud headset call controls require the user to have a WebRTC phone assigned 20. Genesys provides limited technical support for headset call controls 19. Mechanical headset faults and vendor software or firmware problems are the headset vendor's responsibility 19.

Headset vendor Supported clients Connection or software requirement
Jabra Chromium-based browser (Chrome or Edge), desktop app, embedded clients 8 Wired USB or Jabra USB Bluetooth adapter; not the computer's internal Bluetooth adapter 10
Plantronics/Poly Not stated Plantronics Hub installed; USB connection; Poly Lens not supported 151416
Yealink Chrome browser only; not the desktop app or embedded clients 21 Wired USB or Yealink Bluetooth or DECT dongle; not the computer's internal Bluetooth adapter 22
Sennheiser/EPOS Not stated EPOS Connect software 7

Genesys Cloud does not support Jabra headset call controls in Firefox or Safari 11. Genesys Cloud lists the Jabra call controls as answer, hang up, hold, remove from hold, mute, unmute and reject, and availability depends on the headset model 9. To enable Jabra call controls in the browser, the user must accept an Additional Permissions Required prompt, then select the headset in the WebHID connection prompt and click Connect 12.

For Jabra and Yealink headset buttons in Genesys Cloud for Salesforce, the user must open a separate WebRTC window using the Pop WebRTC Phone window setting 17. Genesys Cloud Embeddable Framework customers may need to grant additional HID permissions within their iframe 6.

Genesys Cloud's WebRTC microphone troubleshooting steps include allowing the browser to use the microphone and unmuting the microphone in the client call controls 13. The WebRTC speaker test, which is the blue speaker icon that plays test tones, is available to Chrome browser users only 18.

Microsoft Teams

The Teams Sync device buttons setting, under Settings > Devices, lets the user use all the buttons on the device 40. The Teams button works regardless of that setting 40. Microsoft documents the following known issues and workarounds: 3539374236383433

  • When a user with accounts on multiple tenants switches accounts, button controls can stop syncing; the workaround is to sign in to the intended account and restart Teams 35.
  • After the computer wakes from sleep, Teams and connected peripherals may stop responding to each other's mute and unmute requests; the workaround is to restart Teams 39.
  • After Teams or the computer restarts, a certified peripheral may stop syncing; the workaround is to unplug and reconnect the peripheral 37.
  • Devices with an on-screen dial pad, such as the Yealink MP50, may not show Teams HID controls for mute, answer or end call because they are not recognised as certified Teams devices 42.
  • With a non-certified device paired through native Bluetooth, muting in the Teams app may not update the device's mute state; the workaround is to also press the device's own mute control 36.
  • When the new Teams desktop app and Skype for Business run at the same time, the Sync device buttons option is disabled by design, and ending the Skype for Business session re-enables it 38.
  • In cross-cloud meetings, peripheral button controls do not sync with the Teams desktop app because syncing is supported only when all participants are from the same cloud, and no workaround is listed 34.
  • With a native Bluetooth audio device on Windows 11, the device may suppress the Teams ring tone and play only its built-in ring tone after the computer sends the HFP RING response, and Microsoft lists no workaround 33.

See also Teams phones and certified devices.

Webex

For problems with Poly headsets on the Webex App, Cisco advises installing Poly Lens for Windows version 1.5.0 or above, or contacting Poly 46. Jabra headset models do not currently work on Webex VDI for Dell ThinOS, and Cisco states that support will come in a future release 45. The one-button make-call-out feature is not supported in Webex for handset models 44. For EPOS headsets with Webex on Red Hat Linux, Cisco instructs users to download the latest webex.rpm, uninstall the previous version and reinstall with administrator (sudo) privileges 43.

Webex Contact Center Desktop WebRTC supports Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox, but VDI does not support WebRTC 55.

See also Cisco headsets and Webex App calling endpoints and Troubleshooting softphones in Citrix and VMware virtual desktops.

Zoom

Zoom instructs users to enable the Sync buttons on headset audio setting if their device is on the supported USB HID list and to disable it otherwise 58. Zoom lists the functions supported by USB HID headsets as accepting or declining a meeting invite, accepting or declining an inbound Zoom Phone call, and muting the microphone 57. Only certain Poly, Jabra and EPOS headsets can end a meeting or hang up a Zoom Phone call, and only when used with their USB dongles and associated vendor applications 56.

Jabra Call Control for Amazon Connect

Jabra Call Control for Amazon Connect requires a web application that embeds the Amazon Connect CCP through the Amazon Connect Streams API, Jabra end-user components on the agent computer, and a USB-connected Jabra headset 26. It also requires a Chromium-based browser, such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, on Windows or macOS 25. The SDK is not publicly downloadable, and developers request access through a Jabra developer support ticket 27. With this integration, Jabra Engage 40, 50 and 50 II headsets can toggle agent state, for example available or break, from a customisable headset button 24.

See also Troubleshooting Amazon Connect softphone and CCP audio.

HP Poly Studio Desktop

HP Poly Studio Desktop is the new name of the Poly Lens Desktop app 31. It provides call control integration for Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Cisco Webex, Cisco Jabber 12.9 or later, Avaya Workplace 3.36 or later, and Avaya one-X Agent 2.5.16 or later 32. Any installed Plantronics Hub must be uninstalled before HP Poly Studio Desktop is used for Cisco Jabber or Avaya softphone call control 30. On macOS, HP Poly Studio (Poly Lens Desktop for macOS 2.2 or later) only customises settings and updates software for a device connected by Bluetooth Direct, and it does not provide call control for that device 29.

We infer that an agent who needs Poly headset controls in both Genesys Cloud and Cisco Jabber faces conflicting vendor-software requirements on 1 PC, because Genesys Cloud requires Plantronics Hub and does not support Poly Lens, while Jabber call control through HP Poly Studio requires Plantronics Hub to be uninstalled 28.

Applicability

The Teams Sync device buttons conflict with Skype for Business applies to the new Teams desktop app 38. The suppressed ring tone with native Bluetooth audio devices is documented for Windows 11 33. The EPOS reinstall procedure applies to Webex on Red Hat Linux 43. WebHID is available from Chrome 89 and Edge 89, and device.forget() is available from Chrome 100 4951. WebHidAllowDevicesForUrls requires Microsoft Edge 109 or later on Windows and macOS or 155 or later on Android 4. The macOS Bluetooth Direct limitation applies to Poly Lens Desktop for macOS 2.2 or later 29. Applies to: Genesys Cloud, Genesys Cloud for Salesforce, Genesys Cloud Embeddable Framework, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex App, Cisco Webex Contact Center, Zoom Workplace, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Jabra Call Control for Amazon Connect, and HP Poly Studio Desktop. Deployments: on-premises and multi-tenant. Sources checked 2026-10-02.

What remains uncertain

Cisco states that Jabra support on Webex VDI for Dell ThinOS will come in a future release but gives no release or date 45. Microsoft lists no workaround for the cross-cloud button-sync limitation or for the Windows 11 Bluetooth ring-tone issue 3433. A supported way to run Poly headset controls for Genesys Cloud and Cisco Jabber on the same PC is not covered by the sources below. Whether headset buttons work with Webex Contact Center Desktop is not covered by the sources below. Headset call-control behaviour for softphones and contact center platforms other than those named above is not covered by the sources below.
