Also known as Knowledge Worker, Session Management Edition, Webex Calling DI.
Webex Calling Dedicated Instance is a single-tenant cloud calling option built on the Cisco Unified Communications Manager architecture and integrated with Webex Calling for centralized administration 4. Cisco positions Dedicated Instance as a low-disruption migration path from on-premises Unified CM, preserving existing features, user experience, and integration options without requiring retraining 7.
Architecture and bundled applications
The Dedicated Instance add-on for Webex Calling includes 6 Cisco applications: Cisco Unified Communications Manager, optional Cisco Unified IM and Presence, Cisco Unity Connection, Cisco Expressway, multiple cluster Cisco Emergency Responder in the Americas region only, and optional Cisco Session Management Edition 315. Dedicated Instance supports the same voice and video endpoints as the associated Unified CM release, supports older Cisco endpoints and existing integrations, and can be trunked to third-party private branch exchanges 19. Cisco states that customers have access to the Unified CM security feature set, including encrypted media, secure Survivable Remote Site Telephony, secure over-the-top registration through Mobile and Remote Access, and Emergency Responder with Nomadic E911 24.
Dedicated Instance provides phone and gateway tones in 82 countries, a self-care portal in 50 languages, and clients in more than 30 languages 23. The solution is orderable through partners in specific countries as an add-on to the Webex Calling Flex Plan 3.0 23.
Cluster activation and sizing
A fully deployed Dedicated Instance cluster supports up to 8 call processing servers or approximately 50000 devices on Unified CM version 14 and above 918. A full-size cluster holds 50000 configured devices, and a maximum of 160000 end users can be configured or synchronized over LDAP into the cluster regardless of whether they are active 18.
The count of call processing nodes deployed in a cluster is established during service activation from the Knowledge Worker and Common Area device counts entered in the First Time Setup Wizard 17. Cisco states that the call processing service must not be activated on any node other than the specific nodes Cisco activated in the cluster 17.
Activation timelines, application provisioning, and sizing constraints include:
- The first Unified CM cluster in a Dedicated Instance region is activated within 48 hours of service activation, and subsequent clusters are activated within 5 business days 22.
- Mobile and Remote Access licenses are entitled for 100 percent of the Knowledge Worker count, and business-to-business calling is entitled for 5 percent 20. The operations team deploys Mobile and Remote Access for 20 percent of the Knowledge Worker license at activation, after which the customer can expand toward the full 100 percent entitlement based on consumption 20.
- A customer becomes eligible for a Cisco Session Management Edition deployment when 3 clusters are deployed 25. An SME cluster can span regions and requires a Business Unit approval process initiated by the account manager 25.
- Cisco Unity Connection is installed during activation and sized from the regional Knowledge Worker count, but Cisco requires a support case if an Office 365 integration is needed because that integration alters application sizing 26.
Cisco performs a nightly password-protected backup of every Dedicated Instance UC application and retains the latest 3 backups in the data centre for disaster recovery restoration 16. Cisco states that customers do not have access to these backups and that they do not serve as a change backout strategy 16.
Multi-tenant interoperation and monitoring
Cisco states that calling features are not harmonized between Dedicated Instance and Webex Calling multi-tenant 521. Customers who split users across the 2 platforms experience different features; for example, Webex Calling multi-tenant users cannot participate in a hunt group hosted on Dedicated Instance 521. For the interoperation SIP trunk between multi-tenant and Dedicated Instance to route calls successfully, a PSTN connection and a main number are required on the Webex Calling multi-tenant side 6.
Within Control Hub monitoring, Dedicated Instance-based trunks do not trigger call quality drop alerts, trunk status change alerts, or trunk concurrent call limit alerts 12. For certificate management, a separate Dedicated Instance certificate expiry alert is sent 67 days before expiration and recurs every 12 days until the certificate is renewed 13.

Applicability
Applies to: Cisco Webex Calling Dedicated Instance and Cisco Webex Calling. Deployments: dedicated instance. Sources checked 2026-09-16. Dedicated Instance applies to Unified CM version 14 and later 49. Cisco states there are no new Dedicated Instance deployments in the EMEA region, requiring new customers in that region to select an alternate data centre region 8. Multiple cluster Emergency Responder is restricted to the Americas region only 315.
