In Unified CM, device loads are the software and firmware for devices such as IP phones and telepresence systems that are provisioned by and register to Unified CM 7. Cisco releases updated device firmware to add features and fixes independently of Unified CM software upgrades 16.
Firmware distribution and installation
The TFTP server is the primary firmware download location for Unified CM-registered devices, and alternate download locations called load servers are also supported 45. A load server may be another Unified CM or a third-party server 20. A third-party load server must be able to serve any file the phone requests over HTTP on TCP port 6970 (preferred) or over UDP-based TFTP 18. Some models, such as the DX family of Cisco TelePresence devices, support only HTTP for firmware updates 12.
Device packs and firmware COP files are installed from Cisco Unified OS Administration under Software Upgrades > Install/Upgrade 17. A Unified CM device package introduces new phone types to Unified CM and installs firmware and configuration files that enable features on Cisco devices 8. New features delivered by a device package may be off by default and need their settings configured 9. A firmware COP file installed on the Unified CM publisher contains both the firmware files and database updates, so installing it also updates the default firmware for the affected models 3. Firmware delivered as a zip file rather than a COP file must be extracted and its files uploaded manually to the TFTP directories 60.
To install a k3 or k4 COP file on a Unified CM release earlier than 10.0.1, the Readme for ciscocm.version3-keys.cop.sgn must be consulted to see whether that key COP is needed first 42. For example, 8800 firmware 14.4(1) ships as signed COP files named cmterm-88xx-sip.14-4-1-0001-36.k4.cop.sha512 and cmterm-8845_65-sip.14-4-1-0001-36.k4.cop.sha512 for the video models 39. The 8800 14.4(1) release notes state that the latest Unified CM firmware must be installed on all Unified CM servers in the cluster before the phone firmware release is used 38.
After installing a device pack or firmware, the Cisco TFTP service must be restarted on every node where it runs 36. The Release 15 install procedure includes restarting the Cisco Tomcat service on all cluster nodes after installing a device pack 37. According to a 2018 TAC note, installing a device pack for new device support on Unified CM 11.0(1) and earlier requires a cluster-wide reboot, whereas 11.5(1) and later require service restarts instead 10. Unused firmware can be removed through the Device Load Management window in Cisco Unified OS Administration 33. Loads deleted through Device Load Management cannot be restored without a DRS restore of the entire cluster 5.
Assigning and applying firmware loads
Installing new firmware updates the phone-model device default to the new version, and Cisco recommends setting the default back to the previous load if the organisation is not ready to upgrade phones 4. The TAC device pack procedure copies the current Device Defaults firmware values before installation and restores them afterwards so phones are not upgraded unintentionally 11. System-wide default firmware per phone model is set in Cisco Unified CM Administration at Device > Device Settings > Device Defaults 6.
Cisco notes that a new load can be applied to a single device before it is configured as the system-wide default 32. For an individual phone, the Phone Load Name field on the Phone Configuration window overrides the model's default firmware load 27. The Bulk Administration Tool can set the firmware load for many phones using a CSV file or a query 1. Device > Device Settings > Firmware Load Information lists, by device type, the devices that are not using the default load 23.
Devices obtain new firmware only after they are reset, so installing a load does not by itself upgrade registered phones 34. WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that the Release 15 Manage Device Firmware chapter describes no time-based firmware push scheduler, meaning that when phones upgrade depends on when they are reset after the load is assigned 22. A phone's running firmware can be confirmed on its web page device information or on the phone at Settings > Model Information > Load File 46.
Device-specific behaviors and requirements
The 8800 Product Specific Configuration has separate Load Server (IPv4) and IPv6 Load Server fields identifying the alternate server the phone uses for firmware loads and upgrades 19. Cisco describes the Load Server as a way to shorten firmware upgrade time and offload the WAN by storing images locally 21. On Cisco IP Phone 8800 enterprise firmware, Peer Firmware Sharing lets a phone find other phones of the same model on the subnet and share updated firmware files 26. Cisco positions Peer Firmware Sharing as reducing TFTP server congestion and phone downtime when many phones are reset at the same time 24.
Firmware upgrades over the phone's WLAN interface can take longer than wired upgrades, possibly more than an hour 44. Downgrading an 8800 phone from 14.3(1) or later to a release below 14.3(1) may lose ringtones on multi-line phones, which a factory reset resolves 41. The 8800 14.4(1) release notes require the latest device package on Unified CM and warn the firmware may not work correctly without the required package 40. 8800 firmware 14.4(1) lists Unified CM 8.5(1) and later as the minimum supported call-control release 43.
As of the page's 2026-09-01 update, the latest PhoneOS release for 9800 Series and 8875 phones is 5.0(1), released 2026-08-19 29. PhoneOS 9800 Series and 8875 phones require Cisco Unified CM 12.5(1) or later 30. On PhoneOS 3.2 and later, features delivered through UCM device packages require UCM 14 or 15, and on PhoneOS 5.0 they require UCM 15 28. In addition, 9841NR and 9851NR phones with hardware VID V07 or later appear as phone types only when UCM has cmterm-devicepack15.0.1.15036-1 or later installed 31. WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that the Device Package Compatibility Matrix's current-releases chapter lists only Unified CM 14.0(1), 12.5(1) and 11.5(1), with latest packages dated January 2022, so it cannot be used to pick a Release 15 device pack 2.
Webex Calling upgrade channels
Webex Calling devices have 5 software upgrade channels: Stable, Preview, Stable Delay, Beta and Test 51. Webex Calling upgrade channels apply to all MPP devices, Cisco ATA 191 and 192, and listed Yealink T4x models 50.
Stable is the default upgrade channel for all Webex Calling devices and installs the current preferred software 57. The Preview channel installs the upcoming default software 2 weeks before it reaches the Stable channel 56. The Stable Delay channel installs a recent version previously in Stable, and its software is updated approximately every 3 months 58. The Test channel is used during problem investigation and cannot be configured by administrators from Control Hub 59.
Control Hub lets administrators change the upgrade channel per device or in bulk for up to 1,000 devices, and external administrators cannot modify MPP software channels 48. Changing 1 device's channel installs that channel's software within a few minutes, while bulk channel changes take effect during the regular maintenance window 49. Cisco announces Webex Calling device firmware rollouts on a help-centre page that gives region-specific maintenance windows and Preview, Stable and Stable Delay timing for each release 47.
Enterprise to MPP firmware migration
The UCM-based enterprise-to-MPP conversion uploads transition firmware to the UCM TFTP server and sets the phone's load to that transition firmware, after which the phone reboots into MPP firmware 15. For manual migration, administrators download batch files from Control Hub and upload them to Unified CM through Bulk Administration to apply phone load settings that trigger the firmware download 52. Activation code onboarding is not supported when migrating enterprise phone firmware to MPP for Webex Calling 55.
Migration to MPP firmware for use with Webex Calling through the Control Hub migration tool carries no extra charge, while other enterprise-to-MPP migrations need a per-device migration licence 13. When an eligible enterprise device is added to Webex Calling for migration, a licence is generated automatically and applied when the MPP load requests its onboarding configuration 53.
Sources disagree on the minimum enterprise firmware required for conversion: Cisco's enterprise-to-MPP conversion guide says a 7800 or 8800 phone must run enterprise firmware 14.2.1SR1 or later, otherwise the conversion procedures may not work 14, whereas Cisco's Webex Calling phone migration article lists enterprise firmware 14.1 or later as a prerequisite for migrating a phone to Webex Calling MPP firmware 54.
