Cisco Unity Connection voicemail and migration
Verified 2026-09-24 · 59 sources · tier 2–3
Voicemail functionality is built natively into the Webex Calling offer 58. Webex Calling cannot integrate with a premises voicemail system such as Cisco Unity Connection or Unity Connection Express 53.
Architecture and native voicemail capabilities
Webex Calling includes native voicemail capabilities, supporting shared voicemail and fax mailboxes 5854. Location design calls for provisioning 1 DID for the voicemail number alongside the main location number 33. Mailbox storage allows a single message of up to 10 minutes and a total mailbox capacity of 100 minutes 57. Webex Calling voicemail PINs must be between 6 and 30 digits and must not contain repeated patterns 56. A user's custom voicemail greeting can be recorded or uploaded as a WAV file 55.
For environments using Webex Calling Dedicated Instance, Cisco Unified Communications Manager and Cisco Unity Connection are included as core applications 26. In Dedicated Instance, Unity Connection is deployed at service activation and sized according to the Knowledge Worker count provided per region in the First Time Setup Wizard; integrating with Office 365 requires contacting support because it affects sizing 25.
When Webex App places calls through on-premises Unified CM, its visual voicemail inbox is supplied by Unity Connection, allowing users to play, delete, mark read, and call back messages 50. Unity Connection and Unified CM must use a matching authentication method (legacy SSO, OAuth SSO, or non-SSO), and Cisco recommends matching Unity Connection and Unified CM versions 48. Cisco advises against running visual voicemail concurrently in both Jabber and Webex App due to server performance impacts 49.
Migration to Webex Calling
There is no native mechanism to migrate existing Unity Connection greetings or voicemail messages into Webex Calling voicemail 35. Cisco states that some third-party partner migration tools can migrate some Unity Connection voicemail data, without naming the tools or the data covered 37. The Control Hub feature migration tool covers Auto-Attendant, Devices, Configured Lines, Device Layout (speed dial, shared line), Virtual Line, Call Queue, Hunt Group, Call Park, and User Calling data (call forwarding and call monitoring), but voicemail messages are omitted from this scope 39.
Cisco positions the built-in Webex Calling Auto Attendant as the destination for Unity Connection call handler and auto-attendant functionality, and the Control Hub tool 'Migrate Features from Unified CM' supports migrating Unity Connection configurations to Webex Calling auto attendants 8. Uploading a Unity call handler export file packaged as a .zip up to 2 GB is an optional step in this feature migration workflow 59941.
Cisco's documentation directs administrators to use the CallHandlerDataDump tool to generate this .zip file 11. During migration processing:
- The migration tool's export ZIP generates Auto-AttendantBulk.csv, containing auto attendant provisioning data along with errors and notes 3.
- If an auto attendant number from Unity cannot be determined in Webex Calling, administrators must manually supply the phone number, extension, location, language, and time zone columns in Auto-AttendantBulk.csv 7.
- If the auto attendant number is already assigned to another user in Webex Calling, the file flags the conflict, requiring manual entry of an available number, location, language, and time zone 6.
- If a location cannot be derived from the auto attendant number, the location must be configured manually in the CSV 4.
Unity Connection architecture and tooling
Unity Connection system call handlers answer calls, take messages, present menus, route calls to users and other call handlers, and play audiotext 10. Each call handler includes 3 transfer rules: standard (standard hours), closed (nonbusiness and holiday hours), and alternate, which overrides the other 2 transfer rules at all times when enabled 40. Call handlers support 7 greeting types: standard, closed, holiday, internal, busy, alternate, and error 29. When a holiday is active, Unity Connection plays holiday greetings if enabled and enforces closed-hours transfer rules 30.
Unity Connection interview handlers record callers' answers to a sequence of recorded questions 31. Webex Calling auto attendant menu keys (0-9, *, #) support playing an announcement, transferring with or without prompt, transferring to an operator, transferring to voicemail, dialing by name, dialing by extension, or exiting the menu 52. WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that because interview handlers have no direct match among Webex Calling auto attendant key actions, they are likely to require redesign rather than direct automated migration 32. Custom greetings uploaded to Webex Calling auto attendants must be WAV files formatted as 8 or 16 kHz, 8 or 16 bit mono (u-law, A-law, or PCM), with a file size limit of 2 MB (approximately 4 minutes) 51.
On-premises backup, restore, and data transfer options include:
- CallHandlerDataDump: Runs as a Windows application (Win 7, Win 8, Win 10, 2008R2 listed) requiring Informix ODBC drivers 12. CallHandlerDataDump is at version 1.0.11, last updated on 10/12/2020, and is not supported by Cisco TAC 1413. The tool page lists compatibility with Unity Connection 7.x, 8.x, 9.x, 10.x, and 11.x only 16. WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that executing CallHandlerDataDump against Unity Connection 12.x, 14, or 15 falls outside the versions listed on its page, despite migration guides referencing it 15.
- COBRAS (Cisco Unified Backup and Restore Application Suite): Provides backup and restore via Briefcase mode, and Connection-to-Connection migration via Hot Mode 2120. Current builds are Export 8.0.91 and Import 8.0.111 (dated 11/11/2025), which are TAC supported for Unity Connection versions 7.x through 15.x 242319. Backups of version 7.0(1) contain directory data only, with message extraction requiring version 7.0(2) or later 17. Backups with messages extract directory data (users, call handlers, routing rules), greetings, and messages, requiring large message stores to be split across multiple MDB files 18. WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that COBRAS functions strictly as a Connection-to-Connection tool and does not provide an import path into Webex Calling voicemail 22.
- DRS: Monolithic backup and restore where all pre-existing target data is overwritten, and migrations between restricted and unrestricted installations are unsupported 2728.
- Message Shuttle: Migrates messages only, extracts data exclusively over secure IMAP, and is restricted to restricted Unity Connection installations 34.
Lifecycle dates and integrations
Perpetual licensing for Unity Connection (8.x to 12.x software, user licenses, and upgrade SKUs) reached end of sale on January 23, 2021, and reached its last date of support on January 31, 2024 38.
For version 14 on-premises calling applications, including Unity Connection 14, perpetual licensing reached end of sale on April 7, 2025 42.
- Software maintenance ended on April 7, 2026 46.
- WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that as of 2026-09-24, Unity Connection 14 on perpetual licensing receives no further software maintenance releases and has approximately 7 months of support remaining 45.
- The last date of support is April 30, 2027 43.
- Cisco advises customers on version 14 to move to the latest on-premises release or transition to cloud calling through Collaboration Flex Plan 3.0 44.
Unity Connection version 15 was released on October 16, 2023 47. As of 2026-09-24, Cisco's end-of-life notices contained no end-of-sale or end-of-life notices for version 15 36. Release notes for Unity Connection 15 Service Update 4 (version 15.0.1.14900-45) were first published on June 8, 2026 2. Beginning in 15SU4, the Microsoft Graph API is the only supported option for Office 365 unified messaging integration because EWS is deprecated 1.
