Webex Calling shared lines

Verified 2026-09-15 · 9 claims · sources tier 2

Also known as Private hold, shared line.

A shared line is 1 phone number appearing on up to 35 devices, provisioned by an administrator 8. Paired statuses are published by the shared line so each party can see when the line is active, on hold, or alerting 9.

Shared line behavior

An alerting shared line is shown even when the local phone is set to do not disturb 9. When a call is in progress on a shared line, a coworker can join it using a barge softkey if the administrator-configured barge feature enables the capability 2. Joining via the barge softkey converts the call to a 3-way conference 2.

Private hold places a shared line call into a state that the other party can see but cannot resume 5. The shared line documentation mentions recording once, as a control to start it, and states nothing about whose recording settings apply when 2 users share a line or what happens to a recording when someone barges in 6. Additionally, the documentation does not mention call detail records, call history, or logs 7. The documentation also uses none of the words supervisor, monitor, coach, or whisper 4.

In the field, the shared line documentation scopes itself to the Cisco Desk Phone 9800 series and the Cisco Video Phone 8875 registered to Cisco BroadWorks or Webex Calling, and never mentions the Webex App or a desktop client 3.
