Zoom Phone BYOC and Provider Exchange

Verified 2026-09-25 · 57 sources · tier 2

Also known as BYOC-C, BYOC-P, BYOP-P, Cloud Peering, Premises Peering, Provider Exchange.

Zoom Phone supports PSTN connectivity through Bring Your Own Carrier (BYOC) architectures as well as native service 32. These models include on-premises peering using customer session border controllers (SBCs) and cloud peering through Provider Exchange 41.

BYOC Architecture Models

BYOC-Premises (BYOC-P) presumes existing PSTN connections with a carrier, whereas BYOP-Premises (BYOP-P) presumes an existing PBX with logical connections to an SBC and applies to Zoom Phone only 4. In a hybrid environment, Zoom requires both BYOC-P and BYOP-P to be enabled at the SBC level, whereas a cloud-only deployment requires only BYOC-P 25. Unlike Zoom endpoints, which always connect outward to Zoom, a BYOC-P SBC requires bi-directional connectivity with Zoom data centers 3. Zoom allows organizations to build BYOC-P SIP trunks to SBCs in chosen regions and expects premises equipment in each corresponding region 44. If peering over private circuits rather than the Internet, BGP peering between Zoom and the customer is required using public ASNs and public IP addresses over carrier-procured circuits 39.

By contrast, Zoom BYOC Cloud Peering (BYOC-C) connects one or more carriers directly to Zoom Phone data centers without customer on-premises hardware such as an SBC 1. Under Provider Exchange cloud peering, the customer contracts with and is billed separately by the chosen provider and by Zoom 2. The Zoom Technical Library states that the Provider Exchange network collectively covers over 90 countries with PSTN connectivity 40. Zoom's Provider Exchange product page describes Zoom Native PSTN as available in over 48 countries or territories, which is distinct from Cloud Peering and Premises Peering BYOC 32.

Signaling, Media, and SBC Requirements

Peering with Zoom over the Internet requires TLS 1.2 and SRTP 55. When an administrator adds a BYOC SBC in the Zoom web portal, only the TLS transport protocol is supported and cannot be changed 54. SIP signaling between Zoom and the customer SBC uses TCP port 5061 52. The media port range for BYOC-P and BYOP-P is UDP 10000-64000, which Zoom notes differs from its standard client range 31.

Zoom lists SIP per RFC 3261, DTMF per RFC 2833, and topology hiding per RFC 5853 among its BYOC-P SBC requirements 53. SIP Early Offer is mandatory for INVITEs sent to Zoom 16. Supported audio codecs are Opus, G.722, G.711 u-law, G.711 A-law, and G.729 13. Zoom's preferred codec order is Opus first, followed by G.722, G.711 A-law or u-law, and then G.729 12.

Zoom's highest-priority TLS cipher for BYOC-P signaling is TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 51. The highest-priority SRTP crypto suite for BYOC-P media is AEAD_AES_256_GCM, followed by AES_256_CM_HMAC_SHA1_80, AES_CM_128_HMAC_SHA1_80, and AES_CM_128_HMAC_SHA1_32 30. Zoom does not accept SDP offers or media streams that specify an SRTP Master Key Identifier (MKI) 33. The public certificate on a BYOC SBC must carry the SBC FQDN in the common name or subject alternative name, present the complete certificate chain including intermediates, and carry Server Authentication key usage 97. Zoom requires DigiCert Global Root G2 and DigiCert X9 Financial PKI RSA 4096 Root in the BYOC SBC trust store 15. Internet Security Research Group (Let's Encrypt) is on Zoom's list of supported certificate authorities alongside DigiCert, Sectigo, GlobalSign, and others 29.

Zoom directs BYOC-P customers to use an SBC vendor and model from its certified SBC list, which have undergone interoperability testing with Zoom 11. SBC vendors on the certified list include AudioCodes, Avaya, Cisco, Mitel, NextGen, Oracle, Ribbon, and TE-Systems (anynode) 10.

SIP Session Handling and Call Routing

Zoom BYOC-P accepts only SIP URIs; Tel URIs and secure SIP (SIPS) URIs are not supported 34. On outbound calls from Zoom to the SBC, the Request-URI is E.164 for BYOC-P, while BYOP-P allows localized or E.164 format up to 24 digits 37. For inbound calls, the user part of the Request-URI sent to Zoom should contain the E.164 number for BYOC, whereas BYOP calls may use private extension dialing 26. Zoom supports caller names up to 47 bytes, representing 47 ASCII characters but fewer accented or CJK characters 5. Zoom applies a 30-minute session expiration timer and accepts a minimum session expiration of 90 seconds 50.

Zoom monitors BYOC-P SBC status by sending SIP OPTIONS pings every 30 seconds, marking an SBC down after 4 consecutive failures (taking 90 to 120 seconds) 35. An SBC marked down returns to service after 3 consecutive successful OPTIONS exchanges, typically taking 60 to 90 seconds 36.

Zoom reroutes a BYOC-P call when the SBC is down or answers with SIP 403 408 480 488 500 502 503 504 or 606 22. Failover routing attempts alternate SBCs within the same route group first, followed by backup route groups, and then alternate Zoom data centers 23.

Portal Configuration and Administration

BYOC SBCs, route groups, and SIP groups are managed in the Zoom web portal under Product Configuration then Numbers then BYOC Configuration 38. Route groups are configured with a route type (BYOC-P or BYOP-P), a region, and a distribution method of sequential or load balancing, and can specify a backup route group 46. Zoom states that route group creation may take up to 48 hours to complete 45. For BYOC-P trunks terminated in Hong Kong, Zoom support deletes and recreates the route group with dual data center termination after an administrator temporarily unassigns it from the SIP group 24.

Phone numbers must be assigned to a Common SIP Group to enable both inbound and outbound calling 14. Routing rules use regular expressions and can be defined at the account, site, or group level, with lower-level rules taking precedence 48. Outbound international and special destinations (such as satellite phones) must be enabled on the BYOC tab of account Countries/Regions billing settings and then permitted via the BYOC tab in the International Calling policy 27.

For Provider Exchange, an administrator establishes carrier connectivity from Number Management then Provider Exchange by selecting Connect and entering the account name exactly as it appears in the account profile 42. Provider Exchange numbers then appear in the portal under Number Management then Phone Numbers on the Cloud Peering tab 41.

The Zoom Phone SBCs dashboard reports each SBC status as Online, Offline, Warning, or Disabled, and retains historical call attempts and SIP cause codes for up to 13 months 49.

Emergency Routing and Local Survivability

For US and Canada BYOC numbers, administrators configure whether emergency calls route via Zoom or the third-party BYOC carrier 21. Zoom number management provides a BYOC Address Confirmation bulk action to validate emergency addresses for applicable BYOC-Premises numbers 17. In contrast, BYOC numbers outside the US and Canada must route emergency calls through the BYOC carrier, and the target carrier setting cannot be changed 19.

During a Zoom Phone Local Survivability event, each site supports 1 ELIN that uses a BYOC number as the outgoing calling number to emergency services 56. ZPLS forwarding of user numbers to BYOC numbers is disabled by default and must be enabled manually in the web portal during an event 57.
