SIP trace capture and ladder analysis

In Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), a dialog is identified by a Call-ID alongside local and remote tags 14. Message sequences are tracked across transactions and dialogs to evaluate session state, routing paths, and call terminations 1642.
Protocol fundamentals and call flows
SIP responses are grouped into 6 classes: 1xx provisional, 2xx success, 3xx redirection, 4xx client error, 5xx server error, and 6xx global failure 22. The CSeq header carries an integer and a method name, and this number increments for each new request within a dialog 6. Each SIP proxy inspects the Via header field to determine where to forward a response, removing its own address from the top Via field before transmission 42.
Transaction boundaries differ depending on the response to an INVITE request:
- An ACK sent for a 2xx response to an INVITE constitutes a separate SIP transaction rather than part of the INVITE transaction 1.
- When an INVITE receives a non-2xx final response, the resulting ACK remains part of that same INVITE transaction 2.
Published in December 2003 as BCP 75, RFC 3665 provides standard call flow examples 24. RFC 3665 labels messages sequentially (such as F1, F2) in call flow diagrams and provides the complete text for each numbered message 25. Section 2 of RFC 3665 includes registration call flows covering new registrations, contact list updates, contact list queries, cancellations, and unsuccessful registrations (Section 2.5) 27. In RFC 3665 Sections 3.8 to 3.11, reference flows are given for unsuccessful sessions: no answer, busy, no response from the user agent, and temporarily unavailable 26. Reference flows are also provided for sessions passing through a SIP Application Layer Gateway (ALG) (Section 3.5) and sessions involving a re-INVITE triggered by an IP address change (Section 3.7) 23.
Packet capture and flow analysis tools
Wireshark
Wireshark provides specialized windows for analyzing captured voice signaling:
- VoIP Calls Window: Detects calls signaled across H.323, IAX2, ISUP, MGCP/MEGACO, SIP, SKINNY, and UNISTIM, alongside their associated RTP streams 53. The Flow Sequence control displays a ladder diagram of the message sequence for selected calls 46. The Play Streams control launches the RTP Player for the selected audio streams 47. The window can generate a display filter matching selected calls via Prepare Filter, or limit its display to calls matching the active filter 48. The call table can be copied to the clipboard as CSV or YAML 43.
- SIP Flows Window: Lists all captured SIP transactions—including registrations, messages, and calls—encompassing both in-progress and completed transactions 50. The Wireshark user guide states that the SIP Flows window possesses the same features as the VoIP Calls window 49.
- Flow Graph Window: Formats hosts as vertical lines, rendering packet timestamps on the left and port numbers at arrow ends 45. Diagrams can be exported to PDF, PNG, BMP, JPEG, or ASCII formats 44.
For encrypted captures, Wireshark decrypts TLS traffic when provided a key log file via tls.keylog_file, an approach that functions even with Diffie-Hellman key exchanges 51. Conversely, Wireshark's RSA private key decryption cannot decrypt (EC)DHE cipher suites or TLS 1.3; it requires the server certificate's private key and a full handshake containing a ClientKeyExchange, excluding resumed sessions 52.
sngrep and HOMER
The terminal-based utility sngrep displays SIP call flows from live packet captures or PCAP files 30. Captured packets can be saved to PCAP files using -O (--output) 29. It can also send captures to a HEP/Homer collector using -H (--eep-send) or receive HEP-encapsulated traffic using -L (--eep-listen) 28. Decryption in sngrep supports only specific RSA key-exchange suites (TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA, TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA, TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384), requires an initial handshake, and does not support DH or ECDH sessions 31.
The Extensible Encapsulation Protocol (HEP/EEP) duplicates IP datagrams to a remote collector by encapsulating original packets and header metadata as chunks inside datagrams transported over UDP, TCP, or SCTP 16. Native implementations include Kamailio, OpenSIPS, FreeSWITCH, Asterisk, and RTPEngine, while capture agents include Captagent, Heplify, and Sipgrep 15. HOMER 11.x, licensed under AGPL-3.0, ingests HEP streams over UDP, TCP, TLS, or HTTP and maintains backward compatibility with HEPv3 agents 1817.
Cisco CUBE and Collaboration Solutions Analyzer
On Cisco Unified Border Element (CUBE), VoIP Trace logs SIP signaling and events without enabling active debug commands, running enabled by default since its introduction in IOS XE Amsterdam 17.3.2 10. VoIP Trace captures SIP messages for SIP trunk-to-SIP trunk calls 12. It allocates 10 percent of platform memory by default (configurable between 10 MB and 1000 MB) and overwrites older traces upon reaching capacity 11. Stored trace data is retrieved via show voip trace, which accepts filters such as call-id, session-id, sip-call-id, or correlator 13.
When traditional debugging is used on CUBE, Cisco defines basic SIP debug commands as debug ccsip messages, debug ccsip error, and debug ccsip non-call, while advanced debug commands include debug ccsip all, debug ccsip verbose, and debug voip ccapi inout 7. Baseline configuration requires millisecond debug timestamps, service sequence-numbers, a 10 MB buffer (logging buffered 10000000), and disabled console and monitor logging 9. If router CPU utilization exceeds 80 percent during debug collection, Cisco advises stopping debugs immediately and contacting TAC 8.
The Cisco Collaboration Solutions Analyzer (CSA) Log Analyzer converts raw debug ccsip messages text files into ladder diagrams, requiring that input files contain strictly SIP debug output without extraneous command output 3. CSA log analysis is limited to SIP-to-SIP calls and does not support other voice protocols 5. The analyzer also accepts pcap and pcapng capture files, reporting RTP stream statistics including packet loss 4.
Cloud platform ladder tools
Microsoft Teams Direct Routing
In the Microsoft Teams admin center, the Direct Routing SIP call flow view is located under Analytics & reports > Usage reports > PSTN usage report > Direct Routing tab, accessible by selecting a call and clicking SIP call flow or its Final SIP code value 36. Accessing this view requires the Teams Administrator or Teams Telephony Administrator role 38. Microsoft notes that SIP call flow data can take up to 30 minutes to appear after a call, and records older than 30 days are unavailable 3537.
The ladder interface displays chronological SIP requests, responses, and related SDP exchanged exclusively between the customer SBC and the Microsoft SIP Proxy, indicating direction via arrows 3940. This diagnostic guidance applies only to Direct Routing PSTN calls and does not apply to Operator Connect or Calling Plan deployments 34.
Direct Routing failure events report a SIP response code (CallEndReason) alongside a Microsoft response code (CallEndSubReason), which is typically 6 digits 33. If the Microsoft response code begins with the prefix 560, the final SIP response was generated by the SBC, and the trailing 3 digits reflect the received SIP code (for instance, 560403 indicates a 403 response sent by the SBC); other prefixes indicate generation by a Microsoft service 32. To validate SBC setups, Teams Direct Routing test suites can execute Outbound-Inbound, Simultaneous ring, Media escalation, and Consultative transfer tests using test user credentials 41.
Cisco Webex Calling
Webex Calling diagnostic records are located in Control Hub under Monitoring > Troubleshooting, accessible by users with the full admin, read-only admin, or support admin role 55. Control Hub retains calls for the preceding 21 days, and records appear only after the call ends 56. Call sessions bind multiple call legs using a Correlation ID, allowing searches by Correlation ID, Call ID, email address, phone number, or MAC address 54.
