Cisco's VLAN design for a phone with a PC attached through it puts voice traffic on an auxiliary VLAN and the PC's data traffic on the native VLAN. This addresses three concerns: shortage of IP addresses in one subnet, data traffic degrading voice quality, and security isolation.
