# Webex Contact Center digital channel attachment handling

In Webex Contact Center, the system automatically runs a malware check on all inbound and outbound attachments on all digital channels, and drops any attachment in which malware is detected in both directions[^46][^42]. The attachment types allowed for each channel are configured in Webex Engage as part of the channel templates step when digital channels are provisioned[^41].

## How malware scanning works

Webex Contact Center announced anti-malware scanning of incoming and outgoing digital channel attachments in its What's New entry dated January 31, 2024[^36]. The system runs the check automatically on all inbound and outbound attachments on every digital channel[^46]. An infected attachment is dropped in both directions, customer-to-agent and agent-to-customer[^42]. Agent Desktop shows an infected attachment as an 'Unknown file' and offers no download option[^34].

Attachments that do not meet the PCI rule are dropped and grayed out, and an information icon shows the error message with the reason[^50].

## Configuring attachments

The August 2021 Tenant Self-service Settings release for Webex Contact Center administrators included security settings for chat and email attachments[^52]. Before agents can attach files, an administrator configures the maximum file size, the allowed file types and formats, and the maximum number of files a user can upload[^33]. According to the agent help article, the administrator prerequisite to enable attachments applies only to outbound text and email messages[^40].

In Webex Engage, the 'Enable attachment' toggle is under Settings > Agent console > Conversation pane > Global settings > Attachments[^27]. When that toggle is disabled, no channel allows attachments[^27]. The per-channel attachment settings in Webex Engage define these values[^29]:

- A total file size[^29].
- An individual file size, which cannot exceed the total[^29].
- A number of attachments[^29].
- The supported formats[^29].

The 'Allow Attachments' toggle on the Webex Engage web chat asset lets customers send attachments from the chat widget[^30]. Choosing the PCI compliance option to drop attachments overrides that toggle[^30].

## Supported attachment types by channel

Cisco's supported attachment types tables apply to regular attachments across the digital channels[^53].

- **Livechat, agent to customer:**.doc,.docx,.pdf,.pptx,.ppt,.xls,.xlsx,.csv and.txt[^44].
- **Livechat, customer to agent:**.doc,.docx,.pdf,.pptx,.ppt,.xls,.xlsx and.csv. The.txt type is listed only in the agent-to-customer direction[^45].
- **WhatsApp, agent to customer:**.doc,.docx,.pdf,.pptx,.ppt,.xls,.xlsx and.txt. The.csv type is not listed in this direction[^55].
- **WhatsApp, customer to agent:**.doc,.docx,.pdf,.pptx,.ppt,.html,.xls,.xlsx,.rtf,.xml,.msg,.eml,.csv and.txt[^56].
- **Facebook Messenger, agent to customer:**.doc,.docx,.pdf,.pptx,.ppt,.xls,.xlsx and.txt[^47].
- **Facebook Messenger, customer to agent:** the agent-to-customer types plus.html,.rtf,.xml,.msg,.eml and.csv[^47].
- **Email, agent attachments:**.doc,.docx,.pdf,.pptx,.ppt,.xls,.xlsx and.txt[^37].
- **Email, customer attachments:** the agent types plus.html,.rtf,.xml,.msg,.eml and.csv[^37].
- **Apple Messages for Business, agent to customer:** media as well as documents, including.jpg,.jpeg,.gif,.png,.mp4,.mp3,.wav,.ogg and.mpeg alongside office formats,.pdf,.txt and.csv[^35].

On the WhatsApp channel, multimedia that customers send, such as stickers, pictures and GIFs, appears as attachments in Agent Desktop[^57]. Webex Contact Center does not support WhatsApp voice messages[^58].

At the Webex Connect platform level, Live Chat inbound media includes jpeg, png and gif images, mp3 and wav audio, and mp4 video[^24]. That list is broader than the documents-only Webex Contact Center Livechat attachment list[^24].

## Agent Desktop behavior

Agent Desktop prevents agents from uploading unsupported file types, but it does not restrict opening them[^54]. An agent cannot preview an attachment while composing a text message or email[^48]. Preview becomes available only after the message is sent or received[^48].

Email attachments can appear inline with the email body or as separate attachments[^39]. An August 10, 2026 What's New entry lets admins use inline images in email templates[^43]. The same entry lets admins preview inline images in digital interaction transcripts[^43]. A September 27, 2024 release raised the maximum character limit of an email from 25,000 to 500,000 characters[^38].

## Diagnosing missing or dropped attachments

- **The attachment shows as 'Unknown file' with no download option.** Agent Desktop displays infected attachments this way[^34].
- **The attachment is grayed out with an information icon.** The attachment did not meet the PCI rule, and the icon shows the reason[^50].
- **No channel accepts attachments.** Check the global 'Enable attachment' toggle in Webex Engage, because disabling it blocks attachments on every channel[^27].
- **Web chat customers cannot attach files.** Check whether the PCI compliance option to drop attachments is overriding the web chat asset's 'Allow Attachments' toggle[^30].
- **Inbound Outlook emails arrive without.msg or.eml attachments.** This can happen to emails sent from Microsoft Outlook, and Cisco attributes it to a Microsoft Outlook limitation[^49].

## Size limits

WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that multi-tenant Webex Contact Center attachment size caps are governed by Webex Engage tenant settings rather than by a published platform limit[^51]. We infer this from the System limits article, which lists audio file limits but no digital attachment limits[^51].

At the Webex Connect platform level, the WhatsApp channel accepts documents up to 100 MB, audio and video up to 16 MB, and images up to 5 MB[^26]. The Webex Connect MMS channel limits both the overall payload and each media item to 750 KB[^25]. MMS media URLs must be publicly accessible[^25].

## Contact Center Enterprise differences

### Scanning and size caps

For CCE digital channels through Webex Connect, malware scanning is enabled by default for attachments received across all digital channels[^11]. The April 2025 Webex Contact Center Enterprise agent What's New entry 'Digital Channels Anti-Malware Capabilities' says workflows detect malware in attachments[^4]. The same entry says those workflows notify agents and customers when a file is dropped[^4]. Files detected as malware are not stored on the Webex Connect platform[^12].

Cisco's PCI and anti-malware scanning service enforces a per-file attachment size of 25 MB or less[^17]. That cap applies on top of each channel's own size limits[^17]. A customer attachment over 25 MB is not sent to the agent[^14]. Agent Desktop marks the oversize attachment as could-not-be-scanned and dropped, with no download option[^14]. The customer is told that the attachment(s) could not be processed at the moment[^13].

For CCE email via SMTP, inbound email attachments have a 25 MB size limit[^23]. A sender whose inbound email exceeds that limit gets a delivery failure email and must resend with smaller attachments[^22]. Inline images in inbound CCE emails arrive on Agent Desktop as attachments[^10]. Those inline images are blocked when PCI scanning is enabled[^10].

### Apple Messages for Business in CCE

The 25 MB scanning-service cap is not enforced on Apple Messages for Business[^1]. Instead, that channel allows uploads up to 100 MB to meet Apple's Messaging Service Provider requirements, and it rejects files over 100 MB[^1]. For these attachments, Cisco relies on Apple to maintain compliance and protect against malware attachments[^3]. When an agent sends several attachments at once, the agent sees a confirmation but the customer receives only one of them[^2].

### Notifications and flow variables

In CCE template flows, a customer who sends an infected attachment is told it was dropped because it contains malicious data[^6]. Agent Desktop shows that file as blocked or dropped, with no download option[^6]. In CCE email, the email body still reaches the agent when malicious attachments are detected, and only the attachments are removed[^7].

The dropped file name appears in rejection messages only for Email and WhatsApp[^9]. It does not appear for Live Chat, SMS, Facebook Messenger or Apple Messages for Business[^9]. To show the dropped file name, custom or existing CCE flows must include the logic from the 'Evaluate MalwareScan Compliance' node of the CCE template flow[^5].

The CCE Webex Connect flow variable securityscaninfo exposes isSecurityValidationDone, isSecurityCompliance, droppedAttachmentCount and securityFailedReason[^21]. In securityFailedReason, malware failures begin with 'Malware: Failed:'[^8]. Scan errors and size-limit failures in that field begin with 'System Alert'[^8]. The securityscaninfo variable is backward compatible with the PCI info variable, so existing PCI-based flows can pick up malware scanning without changes[^20].

### Sensitive-data redaction in CCE

During CCE sensitive-data redaction, attachments whose file types are not in the supported file types table are dropped during transmission[^16]. A supported file that contains images, such as a PDF with images, is also dropped[^15].

## Webex App messaging scanning is separate

Anti-malware scanning of files in Webex App messaging is part of the Extended Security Pack and is powered by Cisco Talos ClamAV[^31]. The article that documents it does not cover Contact Center digital channels[^31]. In that service, newly uploaded files are quarantined for evaluation and cannot be downloaded or previewed until they are cleared[^32]. Infected files stay blocked[^32].
