# Webex Calling paging groups

A Webex Calling paging group lets a user place a one-way group page to up to 75 targets by dialing the number or extension assigned to the paging group[^29]. The Group Paging service calls all assigned targets simultaneously[^48].

## How it works

A group page provides one-way audio: the originator has a talk path to the targets, and targets have no talk path to the originator or to each other during the page[^43]. When the page is set up to the targets, the originator hears a 'Paging System Ready' announcement telling them to begin speaking[^46]. The originator ends the page by hanging up[^22].

A paging group must contain more than 1 member[^38], and each paging group member must have at least 1 registered device[^47]. If a caller pages a group that has no registered devices, the caller hears a busy signal[^12]. Paging groups function only on a member's primary devices and do not work on shared devices[^45].

If a paging target does not answer a page, the page does not forward to that target's voicemail[^41]. Targets with Do Not Disturb enabled are not paged[^19]. Furthermore, if a target has configured Single Number Reach (Office Anywhere), Call Forwarding, or Simultaneous Ring, the page is not sent to those destinations[^40].

## Device experience

Paging groups work only with Cisco IP Phone 6800, 7800, 8800, 8875, and 9800 Series, as well as Cisco ATA 191 and ATA 192[^50]. On a Cisco ATA 192, paging works only if an external device with auto-answer is connected to the ATA or the page is answered manually within 1 to 2 seconds[^11].

Cisco's end-user documentation on making and answering paging calls applies to the Cisco Desk Phone 9800 Series and Cisco Video Phone 8875 when registered to Webex Calling or Cisco BroadWorks[^4]. On a 9800 or 8875 phone, dialing the paging group number initiates the page, produces 1 short beep, and automatically ends any active call[^2]. For an incoming page on these models, the call is answered automatically with the microphone muted following 3 short beeps, and the user cannot decline the page[^5]. A top-priority page on a 9800 or 8875 phone may end an active Webex meeting, whereas a lower-priority page notification appears after the meeting finishes[^1].

## Multicast paging on endpoints

Control Hub device parameters for 9800 and 8875 phones include a Multicast Paging Group section under Phone settings that supports up to 10 multicast paging groups per device[^30]. Multicast paging device settings can be configured at the organization, location, or device level, with lower levels taking precedence[^33].

Each multicast paging group on an 8875 or 9800 phone requires a multicast address from the paging server and an individual port, which must be an even number between 1000 and 65534[^35]. Phones in the same group share a multicast number compliant with the line's dial plan, and setting the listen configuration to yes enables the phone to receive pages for that group[^34]. The multicast paging script syntax supports G711a, G711u, G722, or G729 codecs[^31].

Priority for multicast paging on 9800 and 8875 phones is defined from 0 to 3, where 0 holds the active call, 1 mixes page and call audio, 2 plays an alert tone and requires the call to be held or ended, and 3 ignores the page during an active call[^36].

WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that multicast paging configured directly in phone device settings is likely a distinct mechanism from the Control Hub paging group feature, as multicast paging is configured per phone with an address and port, whereas a cloud paging group uses a dialable number and a target list[^32].

## Configuration and licensing

Paging groups are created and edited in Control Hub by navigating to Services > Calling > Features and selecting the Paging Group card[^39]. Administrators can edit an existing group's general settings, phone number, paging targets, and paging originators[^21].

Each paging group is provisioned under a specific location and assigned a name and a phone number or extension, and multiple paging groups can exist within a single location[^28]. The assigned extension must be available and unassigned[^23]. Group setup includes selecting a language from a drop-down menu[^25]. The group's Dial by Name field accepts ASCII characters[^18]. Administrators can present the paging group name as the caller ID or specify a custom caller ID name of up to 128 Unicode characters[^14][^13].

Paging targets can be users, workspaces, or virtual lines[^51][^58]. Paging originators are configured by searching for and adding users, workspaces, or virtual lines[^44]. Administrators can optionally copy the configured targets into the originator list during group creation in Control Hub[^16]. A single user can serve simultaneously as both an originator and a target within the same group[^20].

Group Paging is listed as an included location feature provided at no extra cost[^27]. Paging is supported across all 4 Webex Calling license types: Professional User, Professional Workspace, Standard, and Workspace[^26].

## Unified CM comparison and integrations

In Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Unified CM), paging is provided via integration with Cisco Paging Server, deployed as the InformaCast Virtual Appliance[^56]. InformaCast Basic Paging is included at no charge for Unified CM and Business Edition customers, supporting live audio paging to individual Cisco IP phones or groups of up to 50 phones[^55][^54]. Advanced notification requirements rely on InformaCast Advanced Notification, a separately licensed product that delivers text and audio to overhead paging systems, other devices, and an unlimited number of Cisco IP phones[^53]. Unified CM integrates with Cisco Paging Server using SIP, SNMP, AXL, and CTI over a multicast-enabled network with G.711 regions[^57]. Cisco's end-of-sale listing contains a notice dated 2017-03-02 ending sales of Cisco Singlewire InformaCast Advanced perpetual licenses, but does not list an end-of-sale notice for Cisco Paging Server as a whole[^24].

WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that native Webex Calling group paging handles more endpoints (up to 75 targets without an on-premises server) than Unified CM's bundled InformaCast Basic Paging (up to 50 phones), but does not replace InformaCast Advanced Notification for text alerts, overhead endpoints, or unlimited-endpoint distribution[^15]. Furthermore, WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that because Cisco's Unified CM to Webex Calling migration documentation omits paging from its list of migrated features, paging configurations probably require manual recreation[^37].

For third-party endpoints and external systems:
- Algo SIP endpoints, such as the 8301 SIP Paging Adapter, register to Webex Calling as customer-managed third-party SIP devices added in Control Hub[^7]. Algo devices require firmware 3.4.4 or later, TLS signalling, and SRTP using AES_CM_128_HMAC_SHA1_80; first-generation models without TLS/SRTP support cannot be used[^6].
- CyberData includes SIP paging adapters (such as the model 011233 SIP Paging Adapter) in its Cisco Webex Calling IP-to-analog adapter and paging server product line[^17].
- Singlewire announced InformaCast integration for Webex Calling on 2021-10-19, extending paging and notification support to IP speakers, overhead systems, desktops, digital signage, and mobile devices[^49].
