Vonage Business Communications (VBC) provides business telephony features, administrative controls, and integration APIs managed through a central web portal[^3][^4][^6]. The platform supports call distribution tools including Call Groups and Call Queues alongside external number porting, emergency calling services, and Microsoft Teams connectivity[^20][^39][^33][^17][^52].

## Administration and Session Management

The VBC Admin Portal is accessed at admin.vonage.com[^4]. Within this portal, an Account Administrator or Super User can manage all services and features across every user on the account[^3].

Admin sessions enforce two specific inactivity and duration constraints:
- After 25 minutes of inactivity, a user receives a warning that the session will expire, with the option to extend the session by 30 minutes[^1].
- All users in the Admin Portal must re-authenticate at least once within every 12 hours[^2].

## Call Routing and Queues

VBC offers both Call Groups and Call Queues to distribute incoming calls across user extensions[^24].

### Call Groups

A Call Group directs incoming calls across a defined list of up to 25 extensions[^20]. A group rings its assigned list of extensions only once[^24]. Administrators and Super Users can set up and add Call Groups, but deleting a Call Group from the account requires Super User permissions[^19].

Call Groups support two ring modes: Blast, which alerts all configured extensions simultaneously, and Sequential, which rings extensions in listed order[^21]. The ring duration per extension can be manually entered for up to 5 minutes[^22]. If a call to a Call Group goes unanswered, it routes to voicemail, another extension, or a pre-recorded message[^23]. Call Groups require no agent sign-in and provide no real-time monitoring[^39].

### Call Queues

A Call Queue holds callers in sequential order, playing music or prompts when extensions are busy, rather than ringing an extension list only once[^24]. Queue prompts play between hold music at configurable intervals[^36]. Call Queues require agents to sign in and offer real-time monitoring capabilities[^39].

Agents sign in to a queue by dialling *90 followed by their assigned agent login code, or by toggling status in the desktop or mobile app[^37]. They sign out by dialling *91 followed by the code, or through the app status toggle[^37].

Queue behaviors include:
- **Agent tiering**: Under the In Order of Agent Tier strategy, calls only route to agents in a subsequent tier when all agents in the preceding tier are busy[^42].
- **Caller opt-out**: Callers can be disallowed from opting out, or opt-out can direct them to the queue's voicemail, an extension, a Call Group, another Call Queue, a Virtual Receptionist, or straight to voicemail[^38].
- **Queue additions and overflow configuration**: Setting up Call Queues is restricted to Super Users and Administrators, while adding or removing a queue requires contacting Vonage[^35]. In addition, forwarding an unanswered queue call to another destination after a set duration is adjusted by Vonage Support rather than through admin self-service controls[^43].

### Virtual Receptionist

A Virtual Receptionist answers calls directly via an assigned telephone number, and accounts can host multiple Virtual Receptionists[^60]. In the US, its extension length is 2 to 6 digits and cannot use N11 codes such as 411, 711, or 911[^58].

Virtual Receptionist actions and call flows include:
- **Key options**: Menu keys can route to an extension, forward to an outside number, route to voicemail, trigger dial by name, replay the menu, return to the prior menu, or play a greeting[^59].
- **Dialling**: Dial by Name matches against the first 3 letters of an extension's associated name, while direct extension dialling can also be allowed at any point[^57].
- **Schedules**: Administrators must configure an After Hours flow for calls falling outside of the Business Hours schedule[^55]. Schedules designated as Always in Front take priority over standard hours, allowing administrators to establish holiday or lunch-break overrides[^56].

## Number Porting

Porting telephone numbers to Vonage requires a Letter of Authorization (LOA), serving as the legal request for the losing provider to release the numbers[^27]. The request must include an invoice or Customer Service Record (CSR) displaying the customer name, account number, business name, service address, and the specific numbers being ported[^25]. If the losing provider account requires a PIN, it must be submitted with the request, entering 3-digit PINs with a leading 0[^30].

Administrators initiate ports in the Admin Portal via Dashboard > Transfer Number(s) > Create Request after verifying that the account with the losing carrier remains active[^33]. Active requests are tracked under Phone System > Phone Numbers > Pending Transfers[^29]. Once a transfer date is confirmed, it cannot be rescheduled to an earlier date[^28]. Toll-free port orders cannot be cancelled after confirmation, though their activation date can be postponed by up to 14 days past the approved date[^34].

Port rejections, or jeopardies, appear in the Self-Service Portal (SSP), which was formerly known as Number Transfer Manager[^32]. Common rejection reasons include missing PINs or passwords, name mismatches, address mismatches, disconnected numbers, and missing partial-port instructions for numbers remaining with the prior carrier[^31]. A rejection left unresolved for 21 days leads to automatic order cancellation, requiring a new LOA to restart the transfer[^26].

## Emergency Services (E911)

VBC location management for emergency services applies exclusively to US and Canadian addresses, which must be validated against the Master Street Address Guide (MSAG)[^17]. Under Vonage's Terms of Service, the customer bears responsibility for maintaining and updating emergency locations for its devices and extensions[^12].

Emergency call routing rules operate as follows:
- Calls from MSAG-verified addresses route directly to the local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP)[^15].
- Calls from pending or invalid addresses route to the National Emergency Call Center, where call-center agents confirm the caller's address before transfer to a PSAP[^15]. Address validation against MSAG can take up to 30 days[^11].
- Dynamic location capabilities utilize the HELD protocol where available to direct first responders to a specific unit on a premises[^13].
- Administrators can set voice call, SMS, or email alerts that notify designated recipients whenever an emergency call is placed[^16].

Mobile devices are unsupported by VBC emergency services management; emergency dialling on mobile endpoints falls back to the native dialer over cellular service[^14]. The 2020 e911 Locations article says end users can re-assign the location of devices on their own extension, but adding or modifying locations requires Super User or Administrator privileges[^18].

## Microsoft Teams Integration

Vonage provides two distinct Microsoft Teams integrations for VBC: VBC for Microsoft Teams and VBC Lite for Microsoft Teams[^52].

| Product | Architecture & Licensing | Capabilities & Limits |
| --- | --- | --- |
| VBC for Microsoft Teams | Uses native Teams dialer; requires qualifying Microsoft 365/Office 365 licence and Teams Phone Standard licence per user, plus 1 to 2 spare licences for domain sync[^48][^46]. | Uses Teams call park, recording, call groups, and visual voicemail; incompatible with Receptionist Console[^48][^49]. |
| VBC Lite for Microsoft Teams | Softphone app embedded inside the Teams desktop app; requires no Teams Phone Standard licence[^47]. | Provides in-app calling; SMS and fax functions are restricted to the continental US[^47]. |

Configuring VBC for Microsoft Teams requires Administrator or Super User privileges in VBC as well as Microsoft Global Admin credentials[^44]. The implementation sequence requires purchasing licences in the Admin Portal Store, linking services under Business Apps > VBC for MS Teams, executing the Setup Wizard with tenant validation, configuring settings such as sync, synchronizing users by matching email addresses, and verifying user registration[^51].

Vonage specifies two operational conditions during setup:
- Existing Teams emergency calling policies should be removed when deploying VBC for Microsoft Teams[^45].
- Running simultaneous presence across both Teams and VBC is advised against[^50].

## Developer APIs

The VBC developer platform consists of the Call Recording, Provisioning, Reports, Telephony, and Vonage Integration Platform APIs, alongside a dedicated Call Recording variant for CSP (India) accounts[^6]. Access to these APIs requires a customer organization with at least 50 extensions, arranged through support or a Customer Success Manager[^5]. Support from Vonage is limited to providing technical documentation and provisioning Developer Portal access to qualifying accounts[^9].

VBC APIs utilize OAuth for authentication, which Vonage states is incompatible with Single Sign-On (SSO)[^7]. API access tokens carry a validity of 24 hours, while refresh tokens expire after 7 days[^10]. The setup process requires creating a developer account, signing in, creating an application, subscribing that application to the desired APIs, provisioning a VBC integration user, generating an access token, and executing requests[^8].

The Vonage Integration Platform API supports telephony call control, call detail records, and events:
- Initiating, answering, and ending calls[^53].
- Placing calls on hold and unholding them[^53].
- Performing transfers[^53].
- Redirecting incoming calls to voicemail[^53].
- Querying call history and listing active calls[^53].
- Delivering real-time call event notifications over HTTP webhooks[^53].
