# Unity Connection user and mailbox exports and reports

Canonical: https://warmtransfer.net/knowledge/unity-connection-user-exports

Last verified: 2026-09-22

Cisco Unity Connection provides reporting, bulk export, and administrative API interfaces to extract user account, mailbox, and activity data[^35][^3][^20]. WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that while per-user quota values lack built-in file exports in BAT or Serviceability reports, they can be read through CUPI mailboxattributes, CUMI, and User Data Dump[^34].

## Serviceability reports

Unity Connection Serviceability reports can be generated as a web page, a CSV file, or a PDF file[^35]. When generating a report, administrators can specify the objects to include (such as user accounts or call handlers), the date and time range, and the sort order[^36]. Report output is limited by default to 25,000 records, with a maximum allowed setting of 30,000 records[^27]. However, the User Message Activity report maximum records setting is restricted to 15,000 records[^28]. WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that the per-user report set and record limits appear unchanged between release 12.x (2017) and release 15 (2023)[^38].

Data collection runs every 30 minutes (1,800,000 milliseconds) by default, and data is retained in the reports database for 180 days by default[^7][^37]. If reports show no data, Cisco states to verify in Serviceability under Tools > Service Management that the Connection Reports Data Harvester service is Activated and Started[^23]. If the Data Collection Cycle value under System Settings > Advanced > Reports is configured too high, recent activity might not appear in reports immediately[^8].

The standard Serviceability reports include the following objects and fields[^36]:

* **Users report:** Lists last name, first name, alias, associated Unity Connection or Business Edition server, billing ID, class of service, extension, locked account state, and whether personal call transfer rules are enabled[^54]. The documented field list contains no last sign-in time, mailbox size, message count, or MWI state[^55].
* **User Phone Login and MWI report:** Outputs name, extension, class of service, activity date, time, and source, completed action (such as Login, MWI On or Off, or Phone Dialout), dial-out number and result, and new-message count at login[^31].
* **User Message Activity report:** Contains name, extension, class of service, date and time of each message, message type and action, and sender details[^29].
* **Mailbox Store report:** Scoped per mailbox store rather than per user, providing mail database name, display name, server, access status, mailbox store size, last error, status, and whether the database can be deleted[^26].
* **Unused Voicemail Accounts report:** Lists only user alias, display name, and account creation date and time in GMT[^53]. The Serviceability guide does not define what makes an account unused[^53]. WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that this report cannot identify dormant mailboxes on its own because it lacks activity, size, or message data[^52].
* **User Lockout report:** Records user alias, failed logon attempts, credential type (where 4 indicates an attempt from the Unity Connection conversation), and lock date and time in GMT[^25].
* **Phone Interface Failed Logon report:** Shows user name, alias, caller ID, extension, date and time of failed logons, and whether maximum failed sign-ins were reached[^22].

## Bulk Administration Tool exports

The Bulk Administration Tool (BAT) exports users, users with mailbox, system contacts, distribution lists, distribution list members, and unified messaging accounts to CSV format[^3]. Export files can use UTF-8 or UTF-16 encoding, with the first row reserved for column headings naming the data type[^2].

In BAT files, Alias is the unique text name for the user account and supports up to 64 characters[^1]. The user Extension must be unique among users in the partition, rather than system-wide[^4]. MWI CSV fields consist of `MWIExtension` (the default MWI extension to light) and `MWIMediaSwitchDisplayName` (the phone system controlling the MWI); these fields define MWI configuration rather than active lamp states[^5].

## REST APIs: CUPI and CUMI

WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that the Cisco Unity Connection Provisioning Interface (CUPI) and Cisco Unity Connection Messaging Interface (CUMI) expose mailbox attributes and quotas that lack built-in file exports in BAT or Serviceability reports[^34].

CUPI manages users via `GET /vmrest/users` and `GET /vmrest/users/<objectId>`[^20]. Creating a user with a mailbox requires `Alias` and `DtmfAccessId`[^20]. Filtered searches are supported, such as `GET /vmrest/users?query=(alias startswith ab)`[^17]. Beginning in Unity Connection 12.5 SU3, accounts lacking a voice mailbox are managed using `/vmrest/adminusers` instead of `/vmrest/users`[^12].

Mailbox sizes and quotas can be retrieved via `GET /vmrest/users/<userobjectid>/mailboxattributes`, which returns `ByteSize` (total size of voice messages), `NumMessages`, `Mounted`, `SendQuota`, `ReceiveQuota`, and `WarningQuota`[^14]. `NumMessages` represents a combined count of new, read, and deleted messages rather than an unread count[^16]. For MWI management, `GET /vmrest/users/<user-objectid>/mwis` lists configured indicators; `MwiOn` reflects whether the indicator is on from Unity Connection's perspective rather than confirmed phone lamp hardware state[^15]. A user's MWI can be resynchronized with `POST /vmrest/users/<objectid>?method=resetmwi`[^19].

CUMI provides mailbox status via `GET /vmrest/mailbox`, returning `CurrentSizeInBytes`, `WarningQuota`, `SendQuota`, `ReceiveQuota`, quota status flags (`IsWarningQuotaExceeded`, `IsSendQuotaExceeded`, `IsReceiveQuotaExceeded`), and mount states[^11]. Message counts by folder are available via `GET /vmrest/mailbox/folders` for Inbox, Sent Items, and Deleted Items, each including a `MessageCount` property[^10].

Default system-wide mailbox quotas are 12 MB for warning, 13 MB for send prevention, and 14 MB for send/receive prevention[^32]. These limits can be overridden for individual mailboxes and user templates[^33]. WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that while per-user quota overrides cannot be exported via BAT or Serviceability reports, they can be retrieved via CUPI, CUMI, and User Data Dump[^34].

## User Data Dump

User Data Dump (UDD) is a Windows-based utility that queries Unity Connection over an ODBC proxy on port 20532[^41]. The tool requires the IBM Informix client SDK and exports CSV files with a header row[^41]. The latest build is 8.0.56, dated 2017[^51]. Its documentation lists Connection 7.x through 15 as supported, but Cisco TAC does not support using the tool on unsupported Connection releases[^51].

UDD can export per user the following data categories[^46]:

* **Mailbox metrics and quotas:** Mailbox size in bytes, mailbox store name, quota values (Mailbox Send Quota, Mailbox Send/Receive Quota, and Mailbox Warning Quota in bytes), and message counts categorized by deleted, read, unread, read-secure, and unread-secure[^46][^49].
* **Activity and login timestamps:** Time of Last Call, which reflects the date and time a user called in to check messages converted to the local time of the machine running UDD[^44]. It also outputs 1 or 0 flags for user activity within 60, 90, and 180 days, and total successful phone logins in the last 7 days[^40]. User Data Dump's new-voice-message counts cover only voice messages left through the phone interface, excluding receipts, faxes, and desktop-generated messages[^48].
* **MWI and greetings:** Primary MWI Status (1 for on, 0 for off as recorded by Connection), MWI phone system, and MWI dial strings[^47]. Greeting configuration exports include enable states for closed, alternate, busy, and internal greetings, as well as greeting sources (blank, system, or user-recorded), though audio files are not exported[^43].
* **Enrollment and creation:** Date of user creation and `Set for First Time Enrollment` (1 if flagged, 0 if completed)[^42].

Certain values in UDD originate from the reports database and can lag by up to 30 minutes due to the data collection cycle[^50]. Furthermore, UDD extracts only users homed on the locally connected server and does not include users replicated across a digital network[^45]. In the UDD help documentation, the definition for the field "Mailbox unread messages older than 60 days" erroneously states "arrived 30 or more days ago", matching the 30-day field text[^39].

## Data correlation and keys

WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that Alias serves as the primary natural join key across Serviceability Users reports, BAT CSV exports, User Data Dump, and CUPI, while ObjectId links CUPI and CUMI but does not appear in documented report fields[^24]. WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that Extension is not a reliable global join key on systems with multiple user partitions because duplicate extensions can exist across partitions[^21][^4].

WarmTransfer's reading of the sources is that no single unified last-login field exists across all access channels; administrators must rely on individual records such as dated Login rows in the User Phone Login and MWI report (within data retention limits) or UDD's phone-based Time of Last Call[^30].

## Applicability

Applies to: Cisco Unity Connection and Cisco Unity Connection User Data Dump. Deployments: on-premises. Sources checked 2026-09-22. From Unity Connection 12.5 SU3, accounts without a voice mailbox are managed through a separate `/vmrest/adminusers` resource rather than `/vmrest/users`[^12]. User Data Dump build 8.0.56 lists Connection 7.x through 15 as supported, but Cisco TAC does not support use of the tools on unsupported Connection versions[^51].

## What remains uncertain

Whether Web Inbox, Jabber, IMAP, or ViewMail access updates any last-access field is not covered by the sources below. The full CUPI user object field list and whether any last-login or last-access field exists are not covered by the sources below. Whether User Data Dump 8.0.56 still connects to current Unity Connection release 15 SUs over the Informix ODBC proxy is not covered by the sources below. Cisco does not define what makes an account unused in the Unused Voicemail Accounts report documentation[^53]. User-scoped CUPI greetings URIs and greeting audio retrieval via greetingstreamfiles are not covered by the sources below. Whether userobjectid works on `GET /vmrest/mailbox` for administrative bulk mailbox size reads is not covered by the sources below. CUPI paging parameters and row limits for bulk user and mailboxattributes reads are not covered by the sources below. How report retention interacts with login history depth for dormancy windows exceeding 180 days is not covered by the sources below.
